Let’s be honest. You could hand almost anyone a camera in Banff and get a stunning shot. The mountains do not really give you a bad angle. But there is a difference between a nice photo and a photo that makes people stop scrolling, catch their breath, and say where is that?
That is what Morgan at Moments By Morgan has been doing for couples across Banff National Park. Finding the exact spots, the exact light, and the exact moments that turn a beautiful place into an unforgettable image. After photographing four different couples across some of the most spectacular terrain in the Canadian Rockies, we are pulling back the curtain on every location, what makes each one special, and why you should absolutely be planning your own session here.
Whether you are planning a full wedding day, an intimate elopement, or a couples session that you will print and frame for the rest of your lives, this is your guide. Bookmark it. Share it. Come back to it when you are planning. Let’s get into it.
“Banff does not need a filter. But knowing where to stand, and when to be there, that is everything.”
Location: Tunnel Mountain Trail and Hillside, Banff Town
If there is one location in all of Banff that will make your jaw drop every single time, it is the open hillside of Tunnel Mountain at golden hour and dusk. With the town of Banff laid out in the valley below and Cascade Mountain filling the horizon, this is a scene that feels cinematic without a single prop or setup required.
Morgan photographed one of her couples here right as the sun rose above the peaks. What followed was pure magic. The warm amber tones raking across the dry grass, the soft pink and orange sky, and the moment the couple pulled out a vintage lantern as the last light faded. The town began to light up to start its day. It was one of those sessions where every single frame is a keeper.
This location works equally well at sunset in winter when the snow dusts the slopes and the mountains glow at golden hour. Two completely different looks. Both extraordinary.
PRO TIP Arrive 30 minutes before sunrise and scout your foreground. The hillside has several distinct elevation points. The higher you go, the more of the town you capture behind you. Bring a blanket or a prop for the golden hour wait.
Best in Winter: Snow dusted slopes, crisp mountain air, and pastel winter sunsets. Deeply romantic and incredibly dramatic.
Best in Spring and Fall: Golden dry grass creates a warm earthy palette. Perfect contrast against white capped peaks.

Location: Bow River Pathway and Bow Falls, Banff Town
There is something about moving water that makes people feel alive. The Bow River snaking through the valley with Mt. Rundle towering behind it is one of those views that never gets old. And Bow Falls, just a short walk downstream, adds a dramatic rushing roar that photographers absolutely love.
Morgan brought one of her couples here on a moody fall morning when the river was still partly iced and the falls were surging with snowmelt. The stone bridge wall above the falls became an unexpected stage. Those images are some of the most compelling in the entire gallery. You get that beautiful tension between the powerful rushing water and the stillness of two people completely absorbed in each other.
The riverbank itself offers a completely different feel. Wide open, rocky, and wild. The kind of location where a lace midi dress and worn in boots look effortlessly perfect. You can walk the river path, duck into the tree line, find a flat boulder to sit on, and let the mountain backdrop do its work.
PRO TIP The Bow Falls area gets busy by mid morning. Aim for an early start. Between 7:30 and 8:30am you get soft even light and empty paths. The stone wall at the top of the falls is a slightly hidden gem that most visitors walk right past. Ask Morgan. She knows exactly where to position you.

Location: Lake Minnewanka, Banff National Park
Lake Minnewanka is one of those places that feels like it was designed specifically for saying vows. The stony shoreline stretches out in front of you, the turquoise water mirrors the peaks, and in the distance, the sheer face of Mt. Inglismaldie rises like a cathedral wall. It is, without question, one of the most naturally ceremonial locations in the Canadian Rockies.
Morgan photographed a couple here for their vow exchange. Just the two of them, a bouquet of deep red roses, and that incredible mountain backdrop. The stillness of the moment was amplified by those hand stacked stone cairns you find along the shore. Little monuments to everyone who has stood in exactly that spot and felt something profound. It is that kind of place.
The light at Minnewanka is soft and even for most of the day, making it forgiving and flexible for timing. In winter and early spring, the lake stays partially clear while snow dusts the surrounding mountains. The colour of that water against white peaks is something you really have to see to believe.
PRO TIP Walk past the main parking area and explore along the shore. The further you go, the more privacy and variety you get. The cairns scattered along the beach make beautiful naturally occurring props that connect your images to the soul of the place. Plan for at least 90 minutes here. There is more to explore than most people realize.

Location: Lake Louise, Banff National Park
Yes, it is famous. Yes, everyone knows it. And no, that does not make it any less extraordinary when you are actually standing in front of it. Lake Louise is one of those rare places in the world where the reality somehow exceeds the expectation. In the right hands, with the right light, it produces images that genuinely stop people in their tracks.
The perfect symmetry of the lake reflecting Victoria Glacier and the surrounding peaks is one of the most geometrically satisfying compositions in nature. Morgan captured it in the quiet of an early winter morning. Before the crowds, in soft overcast light that turned the water a luminous grey blue and made the snow on the banks glow. Still. Perfect. Timeless.
PRO TIP The one non negotiable at Lake Louise is to arrive early. This is the most visited lake in Banff National Park. By 9am in any season, the crowds change the energy of the place entirely. Between 6:30 and 7:30am you get the lake almost entirely to yourself. The early morning light bouncing off the water and glacier is unlike anything you will see later in the day.

Location: Banff Gondola, Sulphur Mountain
Take the gondola up. Watch the town of Banff shrink below you. Step out onto the glass railed terrace at the top of Sulphur Mountain and feel the wind and the scale of the Rockies all at once. This is one of the most uniquely dramatic backdrops available to any couple shooting in Banff and Morgan has photographed it beautifully.
The Sky Bistro terrace gives you an elevation of 2,281 metres above sea level, 360 degree views of six mountain ranges, and a backdrop that puts the entire Canadian Rockies behind you. It is the kind of setting where two brides in white gowns, fur wraps, and a bouquet of blush peonies look like they are getting married at the edge of the universe. Because in a way, they are.
But the terrace is just the beginning. Once you step away from the Sky Bistro and follow the summit boardwalk further along the ridge, an entirely different world opens up. The open snowfields stretch out in every direction and the scale of it is something that photographs unlike anything else in Banff. This is where Morgan captured some of the most striking images of the entire shoot. Two brides standing in an open expanse of white snow with nothing but mountain peaks and sky surrounding them. The snowfield and the overcast sky merge into one seamless world of white and the two figures at the centre become the entire focal point of the frame. It is minimalist, powerful, and completely unforgettable.
The snow dusted boardwalk winding through the subalpine zone, the steep terrain dropping away behind them, the sheer silence of being that far above the world. It all contributes to an atmosphere you simply cannot recreate at lower elevation. If you are planning a session at the Banff Gondola do not just stop at the terrace. Keep walking. The summit has more to offer than most people ever discover.
PRO TIP Book your gondola tickets in advance as they sell out, especially on weekends. Wear layers because the summit is significantly colder than town even in spring. Once you are up top follow the boardwalk trail beyond the terrace to reach the open snowfields. The open summit shots work best on overcast days when the soft diffused light wraps around your subjects and creates that dreamy ethereal quality you see in these images. Do not be discouraged by cloud cover up here. It is actually your best friend.

Location: Private Airbnb Rental, Banff
Here is something most wedding photography guides will never tell you. Some of the most intimate and emotionally resonant images from an entire trip can happen inside the place where you are staying. Not at a famous landmark. Not at a viewpoint with a crowd of tourists behind you. Just you, your person, and a beautifully designed space with good light and no agenda.
This couple rented a stunning Airbnb during their Banff stay and Morgan made full use of it. The interiors were warm and thoughtfully designed with an open fireplace, a teal velvet sofa, soft natural light pouring through oversized windows, and mountain views that reminded you exactly where you were even when you were indoors. The resulting images are some of the most personal and quietly beautiful in the entire gallery.
There is something about photographing people in the space where they actually lived during a trip that adds a layer of authenticity you cannot manufacture at a public location. The way she sits on the edge of the sofa. The way he fixes his tie by the fire. The way they look at each other when they think nobody is watching. That is the kind of photography Morgan does best and a beautiful Airbnb gives her the perfect canvas to work with.
If you are planning a Banff elopement or a multi day couples session, intentionally choosing an Airbnb with beautiful interiors is one of the smartest creative decisions you can make. It adds an entirely new location to your shoot without going anywhere at all.
PRO TIP When booking your Banff Airbnb for a photo session look for properties with large windows, neutral or warm toned interiors, and at least one standout architectural feature like a fireplace, exposed beams, or a statement piece of furniture. North or east facing windows give you the softest most consistent natural light throughout the day. Share the listing photos with your photographer before you book so they can confirm it will work well for portraits. Morgan is always happy to weigh in on this kind of decision before you commit.

Honestly? All of it. The magic of working with a photographer who knows Banff the way Morgan does is that you do not have to choose just one location. You build a day that moves through the landscape intentionally. Start at the hotel while the light is soft. Drive to the river in the morning. Hit the summit at midday. End at Tunnel Mountain when the sun drops behind the peaks and the town glows gold below you.
Every single location on this list has produced extraordinary images. But the best location is always the one that fits your story. The one where, when you see the final photo, you do not just see where you were. You feel exactly how you felt in that moment.
Morgan knows these locations intimately. She knows when the light shifts, where to stand, when to wait, and when to move. She is the reason these images exist. If you are planning anything in Banff, whether it is a wedding, an elopement, an anniversary session, or just a moment you want to capture properly, she is who you call.
Banff is one of the most beautiful places on earth. You deserve photos that actually show that.
